Frequently Asked Questions

Will It Hurt?

The periodontal exam can be completed with little or no discomfort. We will always work to make sure you are comfortable.  Procedures are typically performed under local anesthesia.  Discomfort and/or pain are expected after various procedures but they vary from person to person. We will guide and assist you with pain management medications and instructions.

Do I Need X-Rays?

We will need current, clear x-ray images to thoroughly evaluate your oral health. If your referring dentist has taken x-rays, you may request that they be forwarded to us.  On occasion, additional radiographs may still be necessary to properly diagnose any problem.  Keep in mind that modern, computer assisted technology is used in our office which produced lower radiation exposure than traditional dental x-rays.

What Will It Cost?

We must complete a full examination before establishing a treatment plan appropriate for your condition, and in turn, provide the fee for care. The fee for periodontal treatment can vary considerably depending on the diagnosed problem and the complexity of the treatment. An approximate fee can usually be determined at the initial visit.  However, on occasion, additional treatments or further diagnostics may be needed as treatment progresses.  Our practice philosophy is to provide you with comfortable yet appropriate treatment that produces predictable outcomes to achieve stable long-term goals.

Will My Insurance Cover The Cost?

Dental insurance policies often cover periodontal treatment. Please bring all medical and dental benefit information and insurance cards to your examination appointment. Upon request, we will submit a claim to pre-determine your insurance benefits. However, this is not required by most plans

Will I Need Surgery?

We believe that not all patients require surgical care for a successful treatment outcome. We also understand that there are situations in which a patient recognizes the need for surgical care; however, the timing may not be optimal.  In such cases, an individual maintenance plan will be presented until the patient is ready to move into the surgical phase of therapy.  The goal of surgical care is to restore both hard and soft tissue for optimal hygiene management, function, and aesthetics.  All procedures performed are based on sound scientific research, and we will make recommendations based on your individual situation. Our practice philosophy is to provide predictable treatment that can maintain periodontal health.

Can My Teeth Be Saved?

Depending on disease severity, recent advances in periodontal treatment allow us to successfully treat and maintain most teeth

When Will I Go Back To My General Dentist?

Our office and your dentist will work closely together. If crowns and fillings are needed, your dentist will provide them. Regular visits to your dentist are an important part of periodontal maintenance.

What If I Don’t Have Gum Treatment?

Periodontal disease may be a progressive, painless infection. Delaying treatment may result in the loss of additional bone and teeth, and may unnecessarily complicate treatment.
